Jon Flanagan Joins Bolton on Loan
With no future at Liverpool, the fullback heads to Bolton for the remainder of the season.
Even before his assault conviction, Jon Flanagan’s future wasn’t at Liverpool. After it, that seemed even more certain, even if the club chose not to terminate the fullback’s contract. Today, he heads to Bolton in the Championship on loan.
It’s not a permanent deal, and Flanagan will still have a year on his Liverpool contract after the current season ends, but if he performs acceptably for the Championship strugglers it’s likely a permanent home in England’s second-tier will follow.
For Bolton, it seems a bit of a case of desperation to tap a player recently convicted of a violent assault who hasn’t played meaningful football in years, but they’re struggling to stave off relegation and were desperate to bring in players.
The Wanderers currently sit 22nd of 24 teams in the Championship, in the thick of a relegation with six other clubs all within three points of each other. Three will almost certainly end up demoted come the end of the season.
