Ziyech race opens up as Roma interest cools

The door is seemingly open for Liverpool to make a move for Ajax star Hakim Ziyech after principal suitors Roma signed two other attacking midfielders.

Ziyech was reportedly set for a move to the Stadio Olimpico, but a flurry of transfer activity from Roma on Monday has rendered the deal unlikely.

The Serie A side completed the signings of both PSG’s Javier Pastore and promising Inter Milan youngster Nicolo Zaniolo.

According to Football Italia, the deals have significantly boosted the Reds’ chances of signing the Morocco international, mooted as the club’s ‘Plan B’ if their move for Nabil Fekir cannot be resurrected.

Morocco have been knocked out in the group stages of the World Cup, but Ziyech showed himself to be a very talented player in his side’s three games, most notably in their excellent performance against the Spanish.

After recording a whopping 19 assists for Ajax last season, Ziyech has attracted a number of suitors across the continent.

Intriguingly, it is understood that, should Liverpool ultimately sign Fekir, Lyon have Ziyech lined-up as his replacement.

The club, for the moment, insist they have moved on from the saga involving the Frenchman, but remain likely to sign a more creative midfielder in this window.
