Giggs ‘scared’ by Liverpool form

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs says it is ‘scary’ that Liverpool have been able to win their first six league games of the season without hitting top form.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently two points clear at the top of the table and are the only side in a division who can still boast a 100% record.

Unusually, though, the victories have been credited not to Liverpool’s revered front three, but to their solid defensive line and their improved game-management abilities.

And Giggs, who made nearly 1,000 appearances for arch-rivals United, feels the ability to grind out results is the mark of champions.

“Liverpool haven’t played well in some games but scraped results, which is actually quite scary because if you’re able to do that, that’s championship form, so not only the swash-buckling three or four goals, but digging out results is what you need to do to win it,” he wrote in his Sky Sports column.

The Welshman reckons Liverpool, having spent more than £170million to bolster their squad in the previous window, are better-equipped than ever to land a first Premier League title.

“From 1-11 there’s probably not been a better Liverpool team in the Premier League – when Raheem Sterling, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge were on fire they were really impressive but probably overall it looks like a more balanced team now,” he wrote.

“You’ve got players who’ve been in the team a couple of years and you’ve got young players coming through with experience of Jordan Henderson and James Milner so it’s a good blend in there.”

Ultimately, though, he is still backing reigning champions Manchester City to fend off their challenge.

“I’d still just give Manchester City the edge purely because Pep Guardiola usually wins second season after winning the league and they’ve got players who’ve been there and done it.”
