The Portuguese playmaker picked up his fifth yellow card of the season against Bournemouth and will miss next week’s game at Anfield.

In the closing stages of Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, their captain, Bruno Fernandes, picked up a booking for dissent. It was his fifth yellow card in the competition, and as a result of that accumulation, he will be suspended for the next game. That happens to be when Manchester United pay Liverpool FC a visit at Anfield, in what could be a pivotal and season-defining game for both teams, for wildly different reasons.

Fernandes picking up a booking for dissent will not surprise any casual observer of the game, as he’s regarded as one of the biggest whingers in the league. We only need to flashback to March, when Fernandes’ conduct as captain was questioned by pundits and fans alike, as Bruno sulked and pouted on the pitch en route to getting trounced 7-0.

Despite his habit of disappearing or losing his head in big games, Fernandes’ absence will likely be a significant loss for the Red Devils. He is their second-highest goalscorer and also the leader in assists this season. Fernandes’ ability to generate chances out of high-risk, high-reward passes is usually one of their go-to options for a team that often struggles to execute clear offensive patterns. It’ll be interesting to see how they attempt to cope without their captain’s brilliance next Sunday.
