Fenway Sports Group will not purchase FC Bordeaux after all, a result deemed “catastrophic” for the French club.

A last ditch effort to revive the sale of crisis-hit French club FC Bordeaux to Liverpool FC owners Fenway Sports Group has reportedly fallen through tonight and is being described as “catastrophic” for the historic club’s long-term survival chances.

According to local newspaper Sud Ouest Girondins, a late scramble to revive the deal after FSG walked away last week due to concerns over FC Bordeaux not being full owners of their stadium has failed despite earlier reports the city had signalled a willingness to negotiate the sale of their stake in it.

In the end it appears the city was only willing to commit to future negotiations of a sale of the stadium and was resistant to entering into such discussions immediately—or simply felt unable to do so in a manner that would have been responsible while still meeting deadlines for a sale of the club.

Without control of the stadium, FSG had previously signalled they lacked confidence in the long-term financial viability of the club. Without a new owner—and with the season near that now seems impossibility—Bordeaux will be relegated to the third tier.

While many Liverpool fans are against the multi-club ownership model clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City have led the way on and purchasing Bordeaux would have committed them to, it’s clear locals saw FSG as the only lifeline for a club in crisis facing an imminent enforced relegation.
