Rhys Williams and Billy Koumetio had been training with the U21s this pre-season and did not travel to the United States.

Liverpool arrived in the USA on Tuesday afternoon ahead of their 2024-25 pre-season tour, and with a few first team stars missing due to summer international tournaments there will be chances for a number of fringe squad players to impress new manager Arne Slot.

However, while reserve centre halves Sepp van den Berg and Nat Phillips have travelled to the United States, two other Liverpool defenders who have been involved in recent pre-season tours, Rhys Williams and Billy Koumetio, were left behind to train with the U21s.

The 23-year-old Williams was, along with Nat Phillips, one of the fringe defenders who stepped up unexpectedly during the Reds’ injury-ravaged 2020-21 season. This summer there have been rumours of French and Turkish interest in the Preston-born centre half.

The Lyon-born Koumetio joined Liverpool’s academy in 2018 and was for a time seen as one of the club’s most promising prospects following an impressive 2020-21 pre-season, but he has since failed to progress as hoped for. He has been linked with a return to France.
