Liverpool’s Deadline Day Contenders
A who’s who of deadline day proportions. Mostly outs. But you never know.
It’s going to be a quiet deadline day for Liverpool, by all accounts. The big moves for big talent have already happened. All that (probably) remains is to see off those players who will be heading elsewhere this summer. But due to the Premier League and the EFL being the only leagues to shutter the transfer window before the season starts, any player not moving on during the final day still has a chance to join a club in Europe or beyond this month, if they desire.
But looking at the candidates, there’s bound to be a few heading to Premier League clubs.
Divock Origi is going somewhere. Lazar Markovic will be moving on. Simon Mignolet is leaving. Danny Ings is probably off. Sheyi Ojo may get a loan move. And Marko Grujic, who was so nearly returning to Cardiff City, is a mystery all of a sudden.
Danny Ings is the most likely player to move tomorrow. He’s a proven goalscorer in the league and would raise the bar for quite a few teams up and down the table. Crystal Palace and Southampton are potential destinations.
Markovic may have some time before he has to make a final decision on his future. I don’t get the impression the Serbian is staying in England. There’s been talk of Mignolet going to Turkey. If that’s the case, he can relax tomorrow and enjoy the drama. Origi probably didn’t do enough in France last season to convince too many Premier League managers that he’s their guy. So, he might be relaxing too.
There is always the anticipation of a deadline day surprise. Your favorite player forces a transfer to a rival club with just hours left in the window. Or. The club shocks everyone by announcing the signing of your new favorite player and shows video of a helicopter. The emotional spectrum on social media will be radioactive. I mean, it already is radioactive. It’ll be worse than radioactive. Interestingly, they say humans are worse for animals than radiation. Fun fact.
Plenty of Liverpool supporters will hope Nabil Fekir will finally sign for the club. The rumours of a new deal being struck with Lyon for the player or that Liverpool were still motivated to sign Fekir have run on since before the World Cup. But club-connected journalists are saying that nothing has changed and Liverpool’s interest has ended. But maybe, right?
Christian Pulisic is another player who some Liverpool fans have been pining for all summer. Jürgen Klopp knows all about the young, United States international from their time together at Borussia Dortmund but, if anything, a move for Pulisic is expected to tabled until next summer. But maybe, right? See you on the other side.
