Liverpool’s Form Impresses Rivals

Other (current and former) Premier League managers weigh in on Liverpool’s start to the season.

It’s been a pretty decent start to the season for Liverpool, what with setting a new club record with seven straight wins and sitting quite comfortably at the top of the table (thanks again, West Ham). It’s been such a good start, in fact, that Liverpool’s form is a point of conversation for several current and former Premier League managers.

After the 3-0 win against Southampton, it’d be surprising if Saints’ boss Mark Hughes wasn’t at least a bit impressed with the Reds.

“The way they started this season, [they’re definitely title contenders],” Hughes said after the game. “Listen, they will have days when they’re not quite firing and moments when you can catch them out and they’re not able to get up to speed as readily. Some teams will be able to benefit from that.

“But you sense they believe in what they are doing and there’s a drive and determination right through the club at the moment that could see them go all the way.”

Chelsea’s Maurizio Sarri agrees.

“We have to face a team, a very, very good team that has worked with the same coach four or five years, I don’t know exactly,” Sarri said after Chelsea’s draw against West Ham on Sunday. ”They are a step forward than us at the moment. We started to work together 40 days ago and [have had] less time with the international [break].

”For us it is a bit early. We have to work and improve and then maybe in a year it will be the same level as Liverpool.”

Of course, there are still skeptics around. Former Everton boss and possible future USMNT boss doesn’t think this Liverpool squad is all that.

“No, I don’t think [they can win the league],” he told Goals on Sunday.

”I think they’ve got a really good team, but you look back at teams over the years at Liverpool and they had great teams, when it was Alonso, Mascherano, Gerrard, and Torres up front. This is a good Liverpool team as well, but I don’t know if it’s quite as good as that team at that time.”

Let’s prove him wrong.
