Mario Götze Told to Revive Flagging Career by Joining Liverpool

A former teammate thinks the answer to Götze’s ills is to reunite with Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool. It wouldn’t make much sense.

Former Dorussia Dortmund right back Kevin Grosskreutz has said Mario Götze should revive his flagging career with a move to Liverpool, saying the attacker needs to leave Germany to get back to his best and nothing would make more sense than to reunite with Jürgen Klopp.

“I’m very sorry for Mario Gotze at the moment, because stuff is written about him—and only him—every day,” Grosskreutz Sky Germany of the recent trend in the German press to blame Götze for all of Borussia Dortmund’s ills since the 26-year-old re-joined the club.

”In Brugge [a 1-0 victory that drew cristicism], the whole team didn’t play well. Maybe it would be good for him to go abroad in the winter to find a bit more peace and bring his career back on track. Klopp knows him quite well, he would be a good fit for Liverpool.”

It’s an idea that will surely excite some Liverpool fans, but the reality is that at 26 now and having already rejected the possibility of moving to Klopp’s Liverpool once, if there ever was a time when Götze might realistically have joined the club that time has passed.

Götze looked Germany’s brightest talent during his first spell at Dortmund under Klopp but a move to Bayern in 2013 saw his career stall. A lack of playing time and in the end being chased by criticism of poor fitness levels made for a disappointing three seasons.

He rejoined Dotmund in 2016 despite Klopp’s attempts to bring him to Liverpool at the time, and if he arrived at the club now it’s difficult to see where he would fit in and get his playing time, making Grosskreutz’s suggestion of a Liverpool move rather strange.
