Liverpool Women’s Bad Season Continues

Yet another derby loss for the Reds, this time in the Continental Tyres Cup.

There was a brief midweek reprieve for Liverpool Women when they beat Reading 5-4 on penalties in the group stages of the Continental Tyres Cup, but unfortunately, we’re back to a worryingly familiar scoreline after this weekend’s 3-1 defeat against Everton. This is the second derby defeat of the season for the Reds.

The midweek game may have boosted spirits somewhat for both the players and fans, but Sunday afternoon’s defeat has soured that somewhat. Liverpool never stood a chance against an excellent Everton side, who netted two goals within the first ten minutes. Liverpool had a few bright moments when Niamh Fahey scored the Reds’ only goal off an excellent volley, but Everton scored again in the 18th minute, hammering that final nail firmly into Liverpool’s proverbial coffin.

With the final whistle gone, Liverpool found themselves at the bottom of Group Two North in the Continental Tyres Cup.

It’s a rough end to 2018 for Liverpool, but captain Sophie Bradley-Auckland wants us to look forward.

“We’ve had a tough first half of the season,” she said after the midweek win against Reading. ”We’ve got a great group of girls and all we want to do is play well for each other and I think you can see that out on the pitch, we never ever give up and you’ve seen that.”

Onwards and upwards, then. There’s nowhere else to go.
