Arjen Robben: Liverpool Are One Of The Champions League Favorites
The Bayern Munich star sees the Merseyside Reds as a major hurdle in the Champions League.
At 34-years-old, Arjen Robben has been around long enough to know a good team when he sees one. In particular, he’s had the misfortune of being on the wrong end of good Liverpool teams in the Champions League, and on more than one occasion.
He was on the all-conquering early Jose Mourinho Chelsea sides, who were all-conquering until they came to Anfield in the Champions League. Not once, but twice. And then he returned to Anfield with Real Madrid, only to be sent packing 4-0. Unlucky.
The point is, Robben knows a good Liverpool side when he sees one, and he sees one in this side.
“Liverpool is doing well again, just like last year when they made it to the final, and I also see them as a favourite for the Champions League victory this season,” Robben told the Dutch website football-oranje.com.
”For us, it was perhaps the worst possible draw, but it’s going to be a great challenge, we have to look at ourselves, keep working hard and improve ourselves.
”If we have a good day and play the way we want, I’m sure we’ll make it very difficult for Liverpool.”
After Robben’s career of poor Champions League showings at Anfield, he never seemed the type that would dismiss the atmosphere on a European night like so many before him.
It should be a fascinating confrontation, one that the entire football world is focused on, even though the second leg is more than two months away. The winner of this showdown very well be lifting Big Ears for #6 a few months hence.
