Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Starlet Set to Return to Portugal

Rafa Camacho, who began his career at Sporting Lisbon, is said to be on the verge of returning to them on loan.

Having done the job of giving Trent Alexander-Arnold a night off and with Liverpool now out of the FA Cup, multiple reports out of Portugal claim that 18-year-old Rafa Camacho is set to join Sporting Lisbon on loan.

The player has been linked with a move to Sporting—rumoured to be an 18-month loan with a purchase option—for the past few weeks, but Liverpool kept him on hand both to play in the cup and to work on a new deal.

Camacho’s current contract runs through 2020 and so, assuming the Portuguese reports are true, sending him on loan until then would make little sense as he could join another club on a free at that point.

However, as yet there have been no reports from the Liverpool side when it comes to Camacho’s situation, and it’s worth noting that the Portuguese press is generally highly unreliable when it comes to transfers.

It’s possible, then, Camacho will agree a new Liverpool deal and head out on loan in the next few days. It’s also possible to imagine January ending with him still at the club or loaned to an English side for six months.

Whatever does happen next, though, Camacho is one of the club’s more promising youngsters and with the FA Cup off the table a chance to play a bit of regular senior football would make sense for his development.
