Liverpool Reportedly Set to Return to United States for Pre-Season Tour

The club will not alternate pre-season tour destinations this summer and are heading back to America.

Despite having headed to the United States last summer for a pre-season tour that saw the Reds visit North Carolina, New Jersey, and Michigan while taking part in the vaingloriously-named International Champions Cup, Liverpool are set to return to America this summer.

This according to The Liverpool Echo, who say that rather than alternating pre-season tour destinations as they have in the past and heading back to Asia this summer, the Reds will centre this summer’s tour plans around a visit to Boston—a first for the team since 2014.

Both sides of this news, then, are a mild surprise. First that the team won’t be visiting Asia this summer as most would have expected based on past tours, and second that they will have gone five years between offseason visits to Fenway Sports Group’s home turf.

There is as yet no word on who they might face or the exact dates, but given the Boston connection it wouldn’t be a shock to see them again facing off against Roma as they did back in 2014 given that club’s owner also has connections to the north-east city.

New York and Chicago are also likely to be tour stops, as the club seek to hit their three biggest American markets east of the Mississippi, and The Echo suggest that Jürgen Klopp may be the driving force behind a return to the United States for a second year running.

That’s in part said to be due to potential for weather to impact preparations for the 2019-20 season if the team head back to Asia, as was the case during the 2017 tour when monsoon rains and extreme heat was felt by the manager to have had a negative impact.

For those in the region hoping to see Liverpool, though, while it’s not the first team, there are at least said to be plans for the Liverpool Legends to visit this summer, with Hong Kong a likely destination for them.
