Jordan Henderson on Porto Win: The Lads Dug In
Professional performance to get Liverpool into the semis.
Liverpool got the job done at Porto tonight to make it to the Champions League semi finals.
It wasn’t spectacular. Not many will recall this performance in several years’ time. But it was enough. It was professional. It was a deserved win, and Liverpool can now look forward to a trip to the Camp Nou.
Jordan Henderson felt the side did enough to deserve it.
“They are a good a team, they made it intense and the lads dug in and defended really well”, Henderson told BT Sport, as reported by BBC Sport. “They had some half chances. You could see the effort that we put in. I was warming up when Sadio [Mane] scored and I thought it was a goal. I think I was the only one.
”Thankfully it was given and it gave us a real boost coming in at half time.
”When I came on I tried to keep the ball and be sensible. Joe [Gomez] made a great run [for Roberto Firmino’s goal], I just tried to hit an area and it’s a great finish from Bobby,
”The scoreline flattered us a little bit. Porto had a real good go. Even when we went in front it was a real good atmosphere.”
It’s hard to argue too much with the captain’s assessment here. This wasn’t a Liverpool team firing on all cylinders, particularly before the goal was scored, when we were clearly second best. But, over two legs, it’s clear that the right team went through.
What we have waiting for us is a semi-final against Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez, as well as, you know, the best player ever to play football. Liverpool will have to be better than we were in Portugal tonight, as Messi or Suarez would’ve surely finished Porto’s numerous early chances. But that’s a problem to come, as the focus now returns to the Premier League this weekend.
