Jürgen Klopp Calls for Aggressive Approach in Porto Second Leg

The Liverpool manager isn’t taking his side to Portugual looking to see out the lead from the first leg.

Liverpool may have a two goal cushion and the added advantage of Porto not having scored an away goal at Anfield as they prepare for the second leg of their Champions League quarter final, but the tie is far from over.

That was Jürgen Klopp’s warning to anyone thinking tomorrow’s match will be easy on the Reds or that their opponents will simply play out the 90 minutes and give them a free pass into the next round of the competition.

“What would we do?” Klopp asked rhetorically when it was suggested his side has a big edge heading into the match at his pre-match press conference. “That’s the simplest question to ask, and we would go for everything.

“If we were 2-0 down and going into the home leg, would we think we were out? No way. That’s exactly what Porto will be thinking. They always have an intense game, so from the first kick they will go with a clear direction.”

Liverpool, then, expect Porto to push hard to overcome their two goal deficit in a game where they will need two goals to take it to extra time and three to win outright—or four if Liverpool score one of their own.

But Liverpool will push, too. Klopp doesn’t expect Porto to play like they’ve already been beaten—but the Red won’t play as though the two goals they already have are all the goals they’ll want to score in this two-legged tie.

“We go there to win the game,” he added. “That’s the plan. It’s not easy, we know that, but there is no risk that we have to convince the boys again and say, ‘By the way, Porto are really good’ because we know it already.

“We had the analysis meeting this morning , talking about this team. We can compare it a little bit to the City game last year when we were 3-0 up and everybody thought, ‘halfway through’ or whatever.”
