Salah Reflects On Breaking His Goal Drought

Salah’s 50th goals came at the perfect time.

There’s no bad time for a striker to end a goal drought — especially a striker as prolific as Mohamed Salah. But if you’re going to pick a way, then scoring the go-ahead goal to keep your team in the title race five weeks before the end of the season is certainly one good option.

I don’t think most Liverpool fans were overly worried about Salah, not when he continued to play as well as he had been despite not scoring, and not when we had other players like Sadio Mane there to pick up right where the Egyptian left off. But still, seeing him break yet another record by becoming the fastest player to reach 50 Premier League goals, and seeing how much that goal meant to him was extremely satisfying.

It didn’t hurt that the goal in question was a beauty of a breakaway stunner that highlighted all of Salah’s best attributes in one compact, 10-second run. It showed his good positioning, incredible pace, ability to flummox and easily traverse defenders, and of course, the precision of his left foot. And his abs. It also showcased his abs.

After the game, talking to Sky Sports, Salah had this to say about getting that important goal:

“I think that’s goal No.50 for Liverpool in the Premier League, that’s special. After nine games [without scoring], I’m very happy to score a goal to help the team. That’s the most important thing for us.”

And regarding whether he ever thought about passing the ball to Firmino instead of shooting, Salah was playfully honest: “Not at all! I think as a striker you need to score. Always, I’m thinking to score. I just took my decision to shoot the ball and score. I’m happy about it.”

With a hugely important run of games left to take Liverpool to the end of the season, let’s hope that number 50 is the first of several we see until June.
