Virgil van Dijk Reportedly Wins PFA Player of the Year Honours

It won’t be official until Thursday, but reports today claim Van Dijk has won the award.

The PFA won’t announce the winners until tomorrow, but according to reports, Virgil van Dijk is this season’s Player of the Year as voted on by his fellow players, with the Liverpool man beating out Raheem Sterling for the honour.

It’s not hugely surprising given Van Dijk was widely seen as the favourite. Still, with no defender having won since John Terry in 2005, this is an award that typically goes to the league’s best attacker—and that attacker was Sterling.

The shortlist for Player of the Year this season was rounded out by City’s Sergio Aguero and Bernanrdo Silva, Liverpool’s Sadio Mané, and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard. The Daily Mail were first to run the claimed results of the PFA’s PotY award.

Last year, Mohamed Salah won the award, and if as is being reported Van Dijk is this year’s winner he will be the eighth Liverpool payer to claim it following Salah, Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard, John Barnes, Ian Rush, Kenny Dalglish, and Terry McDermott.

The PFA Player of the Year award—as well as the young player award, which is expected to go to Sterling—is set to be officially announced tomorrow. The award gala and presentation is then set to take place on Sunday, April 28.
