Liverpool (and Lovren) To Assess Salah Injury

The club, teammates, and supporters wait to learn the extent of their star forward’s head injury.

There was no shortage of grim images from Liverpool’s visit to Newcastle United this weekend, but the least welcome sight among the lot was no doubt Mohamed Salah’s head injury, which he suffered in a collision with onrushing keeper Martin Dubravka. The club, manager JĂĽrgen Klopp, the squad, and supporters around the world collectively held their breaths as the Egyptian forward had to be stretchered off the park.

Fortunately, there were reports and images circulating after the match that seemed to indicate Salah at least moving about under his own power. Klopp’s post-match remarks seemed to confirm that while Liverpool might have avoided a worst-case scenario with the injury, it was still a serious enough knock that Salah will have to be assessed deliberately and carefully.

“He was then on the ground and the doc had to make a decision ‘on the pitch or off the pitch’, and the decision was off the pitch,” noted Klopp. “We accept that of course.”

“When he came in he was sitting in the dressing room watching the game on television. So he was then fine, but of course we have to wait. He got a proper knock, obviously, in that situation.”

Of course, Liverpool supporters have more than one source of vital information these days. I am, of course, referring to social media. And among the current squad, one of the players with the most social of media presences is Mo Salah BFF Dejan Lovren. Lovren’s Instagram account seems to also indicate that Salah might have been a bit lucky.

If Salah truly can’t remember or recognize Lovren, what will be the fate of one of the universe’s most storied friendships?
