Rumour Mongering: Roma Return for Dejan Lovren

The deal looked off earlier in the month but reports out of Italy claim the Serie A side have returned.

At the start of August, rumours of Dejan Lovren’s likely switch to Serie A and Roma were common, but in the end they amounted to nothing as the Italian side’s desire to do a loan-to-buy deal appeared to kill off any chance of it happening.

With Liverpool not willing to sign off on anything but a straight sale and Lovren not willing to push for the move at any cost, Italian reports had Roma moving on to Juventus’ Daniele Rugani as they sought to strengthen their back line.

Now, though, it appears they will be unlikely to complete that deal, at least according to Gazzetta dello Sport, who say that as a result of that they have gotten back into contact with Liverpool about Lovren and are currently negotiating.

Previously, Roma were said to have offered €3M up front as a loan payment plus a further €12M next summer, but Liverpool are said to want closer to €20M for Lovren—and one imagines that they still aren’t too fond of the loan idea.

While it’s still early, so far this season Lovren has made no appearances for Liverpool and only made the bench once—in the Community Shield against Manchester City, when Jürgen Klopp was allowed to name an extended squad.
