Chelsea Determined to Match Super Cup Performance Against Liverpool

Ross Barkley says that despite their home struggles, the Super Cup shows Chelsea can go toe-to-toe with the Reds.

Liverpool and Chelsea will both be looking to bounce back on Sunday when the two sides meet following disappointing results in the Champions League this week—but for Chelsea to do so, they will have to overcome a worrying home record.

“It’s a weird anomaly we haven’t won at home,” said Blues midfielder Ross Barkley. “We are going to win home games. We have a big game coming up on the weekend and hopefully we win that and start winning our home games.

“We’ve just got to focus on the next game, a big game coming up, and get three points. We’re joint third, we’re not doing bad. We won on the weekend, scoring goals, we have a confident bunch of lads in the team. Every side is beatable on the day.”

In the league, Chelsea have played two of their first five games at home, drawing both. Then there’s the Champions League, where Valencia beat them 1-0 on Tuesday. It’s certainly been a less than inspiring start to the season at Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, though Chelsea are level in third domestically after the first five rounds, their goal differential is level, zero, having scored as many as they’ve conceded—while Liverpool are one of only two sides with a double-digit positive.

In the table, based on position, they’re close. Based on performances and results, there certainly seems more separation. Still, they’re a good side, a side that will be expected to be in the top four race for the duration of 2019-20.

They will also be able to look back to a solid Super Cup performance, where they took the Reds all the way to penalties. They have had their struggles and stumbles to start the season, but they are not a side to be taken lightly.

“It just comes down to hard work, putting the extra yards in, and a little bit of luck,” Barkley added. “Big games bring the best out of all players. You saw how well we performed in the Super Cup. We will perform to those levels again on Sunday.”
