Loris Karius Pressed on Besiktas Future and Possible Liverpool Return

The goalkeeper says he’s saving any decision for the end of the season—but if he plays well, he’s likely to stay in Turkey.

Loris Karius is settling into his second season at Besiktas, and things look far more positive for him there than they did in year one—for one thing, the Turkish club actually appear to be paying his wages this time around.

The downside of it being year two of a two-year loan is that, already, the questions about what comes next for the goalkeeper are starting to arrive, including questions about whether he could yet end up back at Liverpool.

“I’m not thinking about it at the moment,” he said when asked by Turkey’s Star. “There’s still a long way to go before my loan ends. I am focusing on matches, my performances. We will talk about it at the end of the season.”

If Besiktas qualify for the Europa League this season and Karius meets other performance benchmarks, the club will be obligated to pay a £7.25M fee to make the move permanent—something that at the moment seems likely.

It’s not certain, though, that the player will remain in Turkey, and if he doesn’t stick there, a return to England seems unlikely from a Liverpool point of view, leaving a move to Germany perhaps the likeliest alternative outcome.

If Karius continues to play well for Besiktas, though, it should take care of any questions about his future by ensuring that two-year loan turns into a permanent sale by the time next summer rolls around.
