Former Man City footballer apologises for offensive tweet aimed at Liverpool

Former Manchester City footballer Trevor Sinclair has apologised for labelling Liverpool “bin dippers” on Twitter.
The tweet came directly after Manchester City defeated Burnley 4-1 at Turf Moor on Tuesday night.
Sinclair tweeted: “Bin dippers we’re coming for you.”
Sinclair further added fuel to the fire when a few Liverpool supporters reacted by tweeting: ”So sensitive…clam down you’re still 8 points ahead.”

The term, according to the Independent, “is a slur long used by rival fans and is widely understood to refer to the poverty historically suffered by the city”. The tweet has now been deleted, as Sinclair has apologised.
“To any fan that was offended by what I wrote last night I apologise,” Sinclair wrote.
“It was a throw away line regarding closing the gap.
“It wasn’t my intention to offend anyone, especially from a social stance.
“I’m a working class lad and understand how it’s been taken. Sorry.”
