Virgil Van Dijk Hits Back At Piers Morgan On Twitter

Virgil van Dijk is at least twice the man Piers Morgan is, in every way possible. The man just voted the second best male footballer on the planet took time out of his very busy day to politely clap back at Morgan promoting, dare I say it, fake news about him on Twitter.
The ‘news’ in question was a quote from van Dijk stripped of context and posted by the SPORTbible Twitter account.

The account tweeted out the following exchange:
“Reporter to Virgil van Dijk: ‘Cristiano Ronaldo won’t be here tonight, so that’s already one less rival to care about.’
Virgil van Dijk: ‘Was Cristiano Ronaldo really a rival?’”
Friends, that’s what we in the human world refer to as a joke. Sarcasm, to be more specific. Surely an ‘intelligent’ ‘journalist’ like Morgan could spot this, or if not, at least have the common sense to realize that no professional football player, while doing an interview at the Ballon d’Or award ceremony would insult another player up for the same award. It’s an award ceremony, not a celebrity roast, after all.
Sadly, I’m about to shatter some illusions for you. Piers Morgan, as it turns out, was not blessed with that much basic cognizance, and came to the defense of Ronaldo.

“No..[sic] @Cristiano is a far greater player, you’re not in his league,” Morgan responded, heroically coming to Ronaldo’s aid.
Also, tell that to the voters, Mr. Morgan, since they did, indeed, put van Dijk above Ronaldo in the final rankings.
Van Dijk, who was probably pretty busy on Monday, took time out of his day to set the record straight on the matter, responding to Morgan’s tweet with, “Hi Piers, If you don’t jump on the social media bandwagon and would listen to the whole interview then you would know I made a joke, and only got respect for those 2.”

That’s about as polite and good natured of a brush off as you’re likely to see. But at the end of the day, if you’re Virgil van Dijk and you’re talking to Piers Morgan, you can probably afford to be magnanimous.
