Jurgen Klopp provides injury update on Naby Keita

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has ruled Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita out of Sunday’s FA Cup clash against Everton due to a groin injury.

Keita was named to play against Sheffield United at Anfield last night, however, he pulled out moments before kick-off.

Utility James Milner replaced Keita in the starting XI. The Reds claimed a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. Liverpool are 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League table with a game in hand.

In terms of Keita’s fitness, there has been no confirmation in regards to how long the Guinea international will be on the sideline, but Klopp has confirmed that he will miss the Merseyside derby on Sunday.

Klopp told the media: “I don’t know exactly what he has – it was the groin – but I can say already he will not be involved against Everton.

“That makes it 12 adult players we have [available], plus the kids, so that’s not cool, but we cannot change it.

“I have no clue how it happened, I think it was the last shot in the warm-up when he felt something. He came in [the dressing room] and was limping.

“Everybody who has played football has had this kind of injury and it’s not nice, it’s painful.

“I don’t know exactly what it is or how long it will take, but I can say already he will not be ready for Sunday.”

This situation is far from ideal for Liverpool and Keita. The Reds are already missing Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Fabinho to injury.

Keita’s injury was the last thing Klopp needed. One also needs to consider the form Keita was in. He was starting to play some decent football, and then another injury has hit him. That seems to be the story of his Liverpool career thus far.
