Jurgen Klopp provides James Milner injury update

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has stated that the injury Liverpool midfielder James Milner sustained during yesterday’s Merseyside derby is somewhat serious.

Despite making wholesale changes for the FA Cup clash against Everton at Anfield, Liverpool won the game 1-0 thanks to a second-half strike from youngster Curtis Jones.

However, Milner’s injury did take some shine off what was a superb night for the club. Going into the game, Klopp only had 12 senior players available due to injuries, which meant majority of the first XI were given the night off.

Klopp believes Milner’s injury is somewhat serious due to the fact the midfielder felt some pain, but he is unsure how long the Englishman will be stuck on the sideline.

Klopp told his post-match press conference: “Two players started the last game and one of them got injured, so that’s the situation we are in. That’s why a lot of managers make a lot of changes; it’s nothing to do with the cup, it’s the timing.

“[Milner] has pain, that says it’s serious. It’s [his] muscle.”

This is far from ideal for Klopp. A busy December meant injuries were somewhat inevitable, but it would be fair to say that no one believed Liverpool would only have 12 senior players fit heading into yesterday’s clash.

Klopp made the correct decision yesterday resting his stars regardless of the result. The Premier League is far too important to put at risk. Liverpool currently possess a 13-point lead at the top of the table with a game in hand.

A huge positive from yesterday was seeing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain return, who had been injured since Liverpool’s trip to Qatar for the FIFA Club World Cup.
