Steve McManaman gives his verdict on whether Liverpool should sign Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho.

Former Red Steve McManaman believes that Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho, who has been linked with Liverpool in various reports, may be better off looking for a move to a club where he will start on a regular basis.

The Reds have claimed the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup within the past seven months.

Liverpool also possess a 22-point lead at the top of the Premier League table. The aforementioned achievements are to highlight that Jurgen Klopp’s XI is a difficult one to break into.

McManaman believes that Sancho may be better off signing elsewhere, as he can’t see the 19-year-old breaking into Klopp’s side as of yet. He also stated that the transfer fee might be an issue.

“I think he’d prefer to go somewhere where he will start week-in and week-out. I don’t think there’s any problem with that,” McManaman told HorseRacing.net.

“The other thing is the cost implications. How much is he going to cost?

“No doubt, he’s an extremely bright prospect, he’s doing really well in Dortmund, he plays regularly and he’s a star there.

“Whether Liverpool would go for him now is something that I don’t know and if he was available, he’d command big money and I presume that there’s a number of clubs that would go for him.

“Jadon could cost £60m/£75m and that’s a lot of money for somebody that young even though he looks a fantastic prospect.

“It’s a big outlay for a player and in all honesty Liverpool’s young players are all doing well themselves and Jurgen Klopp seems to want to give them a go.”

McManaman does raise a fair point. Liverpool’s starting XI is very difficult to improve at this current moment, which does make it difficult for any player that signs with the club to get regular minutes on the pitch.

However, Sancho does have time on his side. If Liverpool were to try and sign the youngster this window, he should seriously consider the move.

There will come a time where he will get regular minutes on the pitch, but as of right now, he would be a squad player at best. As for the transfer fee, it would be worth it, as Sancho is young.
