Defensive reinforcements incoming.

As you probably know, Liverpool were without both Joe Gomez and Joel Matip over the weekend. That led to Fabinho being played in the centre of defence alongside Virgil van Dijk, where he handled Timo Werner without much of a fuss at all.

Thankfully, the duo shouldn’t be out for long. Speaking to the club website after the game, Jürgen Klopp gave a quick update on the condition of the pair.

”Joe actually should be fine. It was not now really a big one but we have to see. We should be fine Monday already. With Joel, it could be slightly different. It’s not the worst thing in the world but a few weeks, a couple of weeks. Probably after the international break he will be ready again. So we have to see. It’s not cool. It’s crazy, in one day ‘bam bam’ but we have Fabinho and he played an exceptional game, so that was really, really nice.”

Both of them will return fairly soon, but an eye will probably have to be kept on Matip. The 29-year-old had an injury-plagued 2019/2020 season, playing into only 10 Premier League matches. Having already retired from international football duties with Cameroon, the defender should have ample time to recover as the rest of the squad report to their national teams.
