The boss is assessing his options ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash on Wednesday.

Though Virgil van Dijk’s devastating injury got most of the press, the Everton players certainly didn’t stop there. Richarlison also scythed down Thiago, earning himself a straight red card, and sending Thiago to the hospital after the match.

Now the beginning of the Champions League campaign looms on Wednesday, and Thiago’s race for fitness has begun. According to Jürgen Klopp, the Spaniard faces a late fitness challenge to be ready for the Ajax.

“So, yes, he got a knock, a proper knock,” said Klopp. “All the rest, we have to see. It’s not even close to being as serious [as Virgil van Dijk]. But will he be ready for Wednesday? I don’t know yet. We will see.”

The outlook for Naby Keita is better after a second COVID test came back negative and he was allowed to return to training.

“We are still learning, we are all learning about these kind of things when a boy is completely without symptoms, which Naby was. He looked very good yesterday in training, to be honest. But I don’t know how he looks today, how he reacted – that’s much more important then. So, we will see. In the moment, I would probably rather expect him to be involved but I don’t know it.”

The other big misses for the Reds are Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Alisson Becker, both of whom Klopp insists are in good spirits as they work on their recovery.

The injury gods spared the Reds for the last two seasons, but it looks as though its all reverting to the mean now as they’re hit with injuries to several important players all at once.
