Liverpool’s 2,000 Fans Made “Huge Difference” According to Wolves Defender
Leander Dendoncker believes having fans on the Kop played a role in Liverpool’s 4-0 victory.
For the first time since March 11th, fans returned to Anfield on Sunday evening as Liverpool took on Wolves in Premier League action. There were just 2,000 of them in the stadium, but they made their voices heard and they made a difference.
So much so that Wolves defender Leander Dendoncker said it felt as thought they had been playing in a stadium with at least 15,000 home supporters in it—making it, while perhaps not the full Anfield experience, still something quite special.
“I think it’s a huge difference,” he said after Liverpool’s 4-0 victory. “It felt like there were at least 15,000 people in here when you heard the noise. They managed to push their team forward. I hope all the stadiums can be full sometime soon.”
Liverpool, being in the second tier of COVID-19 severity, were able to welcome 2,000 fans back while clubs in Tier One areas were allowed 4,000 fans—or 50% of stadium capacity if smaller. Tier Three areas were barred from fans returning.
Craven Cottage, where Liverpool face Fulham next weekend, are also currently a Tier Two area. However, at the moment Wolverhampton are categorised a Tier Three area, meaning no fans will be in attendance when they host Aston Villa.
