Spanish reports said Wijnaldum had rejected a Liverpool extension. Now English reports say otherwise. Drama!

A week ago, multiple English reports claimed that Gini Wijnaldum’s future was far from decided, and that the 30-year-old Netherlands and Liverpool midfielder needed more time to decide if it lay at Anfield or on the continent.

Today, Spanish reports claimed a decision had been made and that Wijnaldum would not extend his stay at Liverpool beyond the the current season. However, it hasn’t taken long for counter-reports to come out in England.

Following those earlier rumours Wijnaldum had decided to join Barcelona on a free as their first signing of the summer, Sky Sports now say they have been told that is in fact not the case and that a Liverpool stay remains on the table.

However, it’s not all good news, with Sky saying there remains some distance between club and player concerning wages and, potentially, contract length—that there is, as of today, a stalemate between Liverpool and Wijnaldum.

If that stalemate persists—as it appears to have for quite some time now—then a final big contract payday with Barcelona or, perhaps, a club like Inter Milan could still be the most likely eventual outcome of all of this saga.
