Caoimhin Kelleher Speaks on His Rising Role at Liverpool
The young Irish international has become a regular with the first team squad, becoming the de-facto number two goalkeeper behind Alisson.
In a conversation with the club magazine, the youngster spoke about the mood around the training ground — as well as on his uncommon nickname.
In reference to a particularly good set of reaction saves during pre-season training, club vice captain James Milner referred to Caoimhin Kelleher as “the octopus.”
While the nickname is a bit unusual, Kelleher suggests the positive tone of the moniker is typical of the squad: “It was quite a compliment, but the senior players are quite complimentary here,” he said.
This comment is suggestive of a positive atmosphere within training, which might serve to help young players gain confidence and progress.
Kelleher highlights this outcome, suggesting that, “They [the senior players] will let you know if you’re doing well and that’s good because it boosts your confidence as well when you hear players of their stature giving you praise.”
That the club ethos is conducive for youth development is encouraging, and is supported by the emergence of the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, and Kelleher himself over recent years.
Kelleher has featured 10 times for the first team, most recently in the FA Cup tie against Norwich City — and will look to feature again in the next round of the competition. The Irishman is determined to seize his opportunity and help the team progress.
“We just want to be as competitive as we can. A club like us, a team like us, we want to be challenging for the Premier League, the Champions League and everything we can.
“We want to go into every game giving it 100 per cent, like we always do, and see where it takes us.
“I just want to push Alisson as far as I can in training every day and to learn as much as I can as well. When I get opportunities to play I want to do the best I can and just keep performing well.”
Reds supporters will hope his positive start with the club augurs a promising future with the club.
