The winger was left out of Portugal’s squad for a friendly against Qatar yesterday.

For the last several days there have been rumblings out of Portugal indicating that Liverpool winger Diogo Jota has not been training due to a muscle issue. Portuguese outlet Sapo Desporto reported two days ago that he was in doubt for the national team’s friendly against Qatar on Saturday.

Information has otherwise been scarce, with only a few outlets reporting on the potential injury. Unfortunately, the reports seemed to be confirmed by the forward’s omission from the squad in Portugal’s 3-0 victory yesterday.

With Liverpool heading to Watford this coming Saturday, news that Jota has picked up a knock is troublesome. He has been heavily relied upon over the first two months of this season, and his absence would limit the options for Liverpool’s front three.

However, there hasn’t been any indication that he won’t suit up for Saturday’s match yet. According to the Sapo Desporto report, he hadn’t been ruled out of making the squad to face Qatar as of Thursday, which means there had to be at least a slim hope he could play.

This would seem to suggest it’s only a minor knock. Unfortunately, we aren’t likely to know the severity of the injury until he returns to Merseyside and he can be assessed by the Liverpool medical staff. For now, all we can do is hope that it’s nothing too serious.
