Gini Wijnaldum’s “Situation Is Not What I Wanted” at Paris Saint-Germain
So far at least, the Dutch international’s time at PSG hasn’t quite gone to plan.
It’s still early days for Gini Wijnaldum at Paris Saint-Germain, but it’s probably fair to say the former Liverpool player’s first to months at his new club haven’t gone the way he would have expected.
It’s also probably fair to say that the 30-year-old Dutch international hasn’t been given the playing time from his manager or appreciation from the club’s fans that he would have from Jürgen Klopp and the Anfield crowd if he’d stayed.
“I can’t say I’m completely happy,” was Wijnaldum’s response when asked about his time so far at PSG while on duty with the Dutch national team this week. “The situation is not what I wanted, but that’s football.
“I’ll have to learn to deal with that. I’m a fighter. I have to stay positive and work hard to turn it around. I have played a lot in recent years. This is something different and that takes some getting used to.”
Of PSG’s 12 games in all competitions, Wijnaldum has 11 appearances—but he’s played just 502 of the 1080 available minutes, or a little less than 50%. It’s a number that reflects an as yet reduced role for the French club.
Still, there’s plenty of time to go in the season, and Wijnaldum seems too good a player to be stuck on the fringes of new manager Mauricio Pochettino’s first choice eleven. He just needs to keep his head up and keep working hard.
“I was really looking forward to the new step and then this happens,” he added. “It is very difficult. It’s worrying if you don’t play. But it’s just the beginning of the season. A lot can still happen and I will stay positive.”
