The Reds were supposed to get some minutes under their belts against Manchester United on Sunday, but manage Matt Beard said too many players were dealing with injury issues.

The Liverpool FC Women were expected to continue their preseason preparations on Sunday with a friendly at the Carrington training facility of Manchester United. That match will unfortunately not take place as expected. Liverpool manager Matt Beard provided and update, stating that enough players were dealing with injury issues that the Reds would not have enough of a squad for the friendly match.

“Unfortunately, over the last few weeks we’ve picked up a number of injuries to players who were involved in the international window during the close-season. This has limited the availability of the squad, so it’s best that we take this opportunity to have a bit of a reset.”

“I’d like to thank the staff and players at Manchester United for their understanding and of course apologise to them for the disruption. We need to think of the bigger picture for the team and, of course, all focus is on building up to that opening game of the season against Leicester City on September 22.”

It is certainly not the news you hope to hear during preseason. Beard does not list who is dealing with injury issues, nor the severity, but hopefully there are no issues that will keep any player out for a significant amount of time.

The good news is there is still a month left in the extended preseason before the WSL season kicks off, so there should be time for recovery for any more minor niggles. Liverpool are expected to have three more friendlies against Birmingham (Sept. 1), Manchester City (Sept. 7), and Everton (Sept. 15). If any more friendlies are cancelled, we will reserve the right to begin to panic a little bit more.
