Revenge Not on Robertson’s Mind Against Madrid
He also charted a nice account of the Reds’ road to success in the process.
Liverpool FC defender Andrew Robertson spoke at the pre-game press conference against Real Madrid. Of course, he was asked if there was any added incentive for the Reds because of their recent history against Los Blancos.
This will be the seventh time the Reds have faced Los Blancos in the past six years, but they have yet to taste victory, including in the 2018 and 2022 finals.
Robertson dismissed the notion, but in the course of doing that, gave a really nice account of the Reds’ road to success during the early Klopp years:
“I don’t really look into owing people one, or revenge, or anything like that...”
“Both games [in the final] were different. I think 2018 was so important for our journey.”
“Nobody really expected us to be in the Champions League final that year.”
“It gave us the belief that we could compete in the tournament again and go on and then win it the next year, which was so important.”
“I think 2022 obviously hurt a lot more at the time; I thought we played well in the game, I thought we dominated the game.”
“Their goalkeeper was Man of the Match, which probably tells you a lot. But they do what they do, there’s a reason why they’ve won the competition the most out of any team.”
“But I think the squad is too new, I think their squad is too new.”
“We’re just looking at tomorrow to try to strengthen our position at the top of that table because we know how important finishing in the top eight can be in terms of seeding for the last 16 and not having a play-off.”
“That’s all we’re focused on.”
Regardless of where the subject exists in the players’ headspace, Liverpool do have the chance to serve up some cold revenge on the menu. Real Madrid are currently 21st in the Champions League table and, as it stands, would need to play an extra two-leg knockout tie to progress to the round of 16. Meanwhile, Liverpool began this match week at the top of the table and was the only undefeated team in the competition. The Reds could hamper Madrid’s hopes with a win here and take out one of the competition’s perennial contenders before they can get going this season.
