Having missed three months due to injury, the young midfielder returned to action against Fulham and is eyeing a start against Southampton in the League Cup.

In his first pre-season under new head coach Arne Slot, young midfielder Harvey Elliott was one of Liverpool’s summer standouts but a foot injury early in the season sidelined the 21-year-old and kept him out of action for three months.

Having made his return off the bench against Fulham on the weekend, he’s now eyeing Wednesday’s League Cup quarter-final against Southampton as a potential first start of the 2024-25 season as he looks to build up his match fitness.

“Nothing can compare to match fitness and I feel like that’s what I need,” Elliott said when speaking to the press ahead of the game. “It’s just about working hard in training and proving that I am ready. I’m just waiting for my opportunity.

“I’m hungrier than ever to get back out on the pitch and to help and I feel like now I am in a position where I feel 100% again. I wouldn’t say I’m ‘desperate’ because I feel like that’s when you’ll maybe start going off the rails a little bit.

“I feel like it’s just for me to go out and just enjoy my football again. I don’t want to put pressure on because last season and the seasons before when I was playing a fair amount I never did that, so for me to do that now would be wrong.”

Elliott made a total of 53 appearances totalling 2,786 minutes of action for the Reds last season while contributing four goals and 11 assists, and most expected a similarly sized role for in 2024-25 before he suffered his early injury setback.

The emergence of Ryan Gravenberch and more minutes for Curtis Jones in his absence means Elliott won’t just be competing with Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister for time, but with a busy fixture list he will get opportunities.

“I just want to go out, enjoy putting on the kit again, and hopefully put in a good performance,” he added. “We’re there to win and that’s the priority really—it’s not about me, it’s about the team and however I can help I’m going to do.”
