Slot Talk: “Keep Doing That for Three More Months”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot was impressed by his side’s performance in Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City but isn’t taking anything for granted in the title race.

Before Liverpool’s game away against Manchester City at The Etihad on Sunday, manager Arne Slot had said his Reds would have to suffer if they were to end the day with all three points. They did just that. And emerged with three points as their reward.

It was the kind of defensive display that hadn’t been seen before this season from them. That has rarely been seen in recent seasons, perhaps not since another win against City, the 3-1 win in November of 2019-20 that helped build that season’s dominant title run.

Liverpool played on the counter. They got their goals ruthlessly thanks to Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai. Then they locked the game down. They allowed City to have the ball. And they worked and suffered to ensure City did absolutely nothing with it.

“If you play away at the Etihad, if you win there it is always a big win, no matter what the league table looks like,” Slot said afterwards. “If you play away against a Pep [Guardiola] team it is almost impossible to have more ball possession than his team has.

“We knew we had to defend a lot and that’s what we did really well and then some good moments in the counter-attack led to us winning the game. Looking at [the players], how hard they all work, I think all of them want to achieve something this season.

“But we know how hard it is. This league has always gone until the end—except the one season Liverpool won with a 25-point gap. The boys have worked every day to be where they are and I hope and assume they will keep doing that for three more months.”

They will need to find a way to recover quickly with Newcastle up on Wednesday, though that game being at Anfield—as seven of the final eleven are—should give them an edge, and their FA Cup disappointment means a silver lining of no game next weekend.

The following Wednesday it’s back to Europe, with the first leg of their Round of 16 tie at Paris Saint-Germain on the 5th before a weekend meeting with relegation favourites Southampton at Anfield and then the return leg against PSG at Anfield on the 11th.
