Liverpool Legend Kenny Dalglish Calls for Summer Squad Investment

After a quiet 2024 summer transfer window, Dalglish wants manager Arne Slot backed in the market to best position the Reds to defend their Premier League title.
Liverpool made two signings last summer. One, goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, was allowed to remain at Valencia on loan for the season. The other, winger Federico Chiesa, was a target of opportunity who has made just four league appearances and does not appear to be in manager Arne Slot’s long-term plans.
Now heading into his first off-season as the sitting manager of Liverpool Football Club—as winners of the Premier League in his first season in charge, no less—it’s important to back Slot should he wish to tweak or add to the squad in the coming months. That’s the message to the club from Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish.
“Let him get on with the job,” Dalglish noted. “He might change players. If he wants to, they should give him as much help as they possibly can. There’s nothing that really needs to be changed within the framework of what he did, the principles, [but] if he wants to buy then hopefully there will be finance there for him.
“Everybody is enjoying the moment, now they’re going to look ahead and get themselves organised for next season. I think if you stand still, if you don’t try to move forward, you’re going to get left behind. I don’t think there’s too many [players] that have let them down, if any, but he’s still got to strengthen for next year.”
While Slot appears to fully trust a core group of players—a group that secured the club its 20th league title over the past weekend—there are others on the fringes of the first team who have struggled for minutes even when it’s seemed obvious a change in approach or a fresh set of legs would help the Reds’ chances.
The proof of just how good a side Slot was gifted by departing manager Jürgen Klopp is obvious in that result, but it also feels as though at least one bit signing for each outfield position group would be helpful—perhaps even necessary—to defend 2024-25’s title and perhaps push further in other competitions.
