Rumour Mongering: Rodrygo Waiting for Liverpool as Tottenham Enter Race
Tottenham are interested in signing Real Madrid’s Brazilian winger Rodrygo but the player is said to be waiting to see if Liverpool move for him first.
Liverpool are in the midst of a major overhaul of their attacking group, having recently signed Hugo Ekitike from Frankfurt while Luis Diaz is on his way to Bayern Munich today to undergo a medical after the Reds accepted a €75M (£65.5M) offer for the winger.
Darwin Nuñez and Federico Chiesa are also expected to depart the club, and following the tragic death of striker Diogo Jota it sets up a situation where Liverpool could enter the season with just Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, and Ekitike as recognised first team forwards.
Reliable links to Newcastle superstar Alexander Isak and Lyon’s promising 20-year-old Malick Fofana make it clear the club know that would not set them up for a title defence and to go deeper in Europe and the cups. If all the sales go through, there will be signings.
And if not Isak and Fofana, perhaps one of those signings could be 24-year-old Real Madrid and Brazil winger Rodrygo, who’s looking to leave the Spanish capital this summer in search of playing time given he’s currently stuck behind Kylian Mbappe and Venicius, Jr., on the depth chart.
Liverpool have been linked o with the player this summer, though reports from the club’s, while not ruling him out entirely, have always insisted that Rodrygo isn’t a player they’re actively working to sign at the moment. Now, Tottenham are said to be interested.
However, Marca’s Ramon Alvarez—widely seen as on the reliable side of the aisle when for Madrid insight—says the player is dragging his feet on a potential Spurs move. Rodrygo is said to broadly be open to the move, but he doesn’t want to commit while Liverpool could be an option.
If Liverpool were to sign Isak, then along with Salah, Gakpo, and Ekitike they would have four marquee players to rotate through the three forward roles. In that scenario, the fee and wages Rodrygo would require would seem to rule him out as a potential signing.
In that scenario, a promising—and cheaper—young player would seem to make more sense. Were it to prove impossible to get a deal for Isak done, though, it could well be that the Reds would look to Rodrygo as the best available option to round out their rebuilt attacking unit.
