Liverpool got the win they desperately needed against Sunderland on Wednesday evening, but it came at a cost as Wataru Endo suffered what is expected to be a significant injury to his foot or ankle and had to be stretchered off the pitch.

“It’s a serious one,” Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said after the match. “How serious we don’t know yet because it still has to be assessed, but it doesn’t look good. I’m not too sure if it’s his ankle or his foot, but I assume he will be out for a long, long time.

“What is long is difficult to say at this moment, but you can hardly believe what this rightback position brings us this season.”

Endo was given a rare start for Slot’s Reds on Wednesday, filling in at a right back position that has seen both Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong miss significant portions of the season with serious injuries. Both are currently sidelined.

Following the injury, Endo shockingly managed to regain his feet and helped to defend a corner before having to be stretchered off.

With regular emergency right back and star of the season Dominik Szoboszlai serving a suspension, Endo was replaced by Joe Gomez for the remainder of the match, and those two are now set to be Slot’s only options for the foreseeable future.
