Mamardashvili Set for Galatasaray Start as Alisson Left in Liverpool
Giorgi Mamardashvili appears all but certain to get the start for Liverpool when the Reds return to action in the Champions League against Galatasaray in the Round of 16 after first choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker was left out of the travelling squad heading to Istanbul due to an injury.
Alisson reportedly suffered an injury in training earlier in the day, and while the specifics and potential duration and recovery timeline of the injury haven’t yet been confirmed by the club, there’s simply no hiding that the 33-year-old Brazil international wasn’t fit to be in the travelling squad.
Mamardashvili is joined in the travelling squad by third-choice stopper Freddie Woodman. Woodman was the first choice and starter for Preston North End in the Championship last season where the 29-year-old made 44 appearances—and he made 138 over the past three seasons.
The third choice emergency goalkeeper for Tuesday night will be 18-year-old academy prospect Kornel Miściur. Forward Federico Chiesa was also ruled not fit to travel, which will be disappointing but at this stage hardly surprising news for fans of the talented but injury prone Italian.
For Alisson, who also has an increasingly concerning injury history, this is the standout glovesman’s second injury setback of the season. He missed nine games in the autumn due to a hamstring injury after missing significant periods in 2023-24 and 2024-25 with the same injury.
