Rumour Mongering: Arsenal Join Liverpool in Barcola Chase
Per the BBC’s Senior Football Correspondent Sami Mokbel, Arsenal have registered their interest in Paris Saint-Germain’s 23-year-old winger Bradley Barcola. Liverpool FC have been rumoured to be interested in the French attacker, and those links have intensified after Yan Diomande indicated he would prefer to join PSG rather than Liverpool.
On Arsenal’s front, Barcola is being presented as an alternative to Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers. Villa have reportedly slapped an asking price of £130m on the player, which is probably why the Gunners are looking around.
However, according to David Ornstein in the Athletic’s weekly transfer deal sheet column, PSG “feel the speculated market rate for Barcola, who is not for sale, is way off and he should be valued at a much higher price than the £116m Manchester City will pay for Elliot Anderson.”
This could simply be PSG protecting Barcola’s value, but the player has been rumoured to be available over the past season due to the player not signing an extension, likely from being lower in the pecking order behind PSG’s other attackers like Ousmane DembĂ©lĂ©, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and DĂ©sirĂ© DouĂ©. Adding Diomande would surely exacerbate that situation, despite PSG’s public stance.
Plus, PSG also know Liverpool have at least £100m available to spend, since the Reds were their rivals in the pursuit of Diomande. If Arsenal want a cheaper alternative, I doubt they find it in Barcola. Either way, it’s going to be an expensive market if you’re shopping for any top player this summer.
