Joe Gomez Expected To Be Fit After Injury Scare

The Liverpool defender suffered an ankle injury during England’s friendly match with the Netherlands that isn’t thought to be so serious anymore.

I’m old enough to remember a time when Liverpool supporters wouldn’t be too worried about Joe Gomez picking up a knock while on international duty. This is not that time. We’ve entered a new era where Gomez and his considerable young talents have become an important aspect of Jurgen Klopp’s team..

So it was especially concerning when Gomez left the pitch yesterday after ten minutes in England’s match with the Netherlands.

Reports were that his ankle had done something bad in an effort to both hurt Joe’s feelings and to torture Liverpool fans the world over wondering how serious we should be about our liquor purchases from now until the end of the season.

But there’s a sliver a hope for Joe. Word from the FA is that the Liverpool defender’s ankle isn’t injured enough to require that he return home to be checked over at Melwood.

“Joe Gomez remains with the squad for further assessment following his tenth-minute withdrawal from last night’s win over the Netherlands,” said the FA official in the official statement.

Klopp will need both Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold to give all the full back power they’ve got for the remaining matches. Nathaniel Clyne is nowhere near first-team ready and beyond him the options look dicey if Klopp found himself in need of emergency reinforcements at right back.

So, while the full extent of Joe’s ankle injury isn’t known, it’s at least encouraging to hear that he’s been given an all-clear by the England physios and won’t require further analysis from Liverpool for the time being. Until he does and then Trent goes down and then it’s Dejan Lovren, vocal and commanding full back, to the rescue.
