Klopp and Henderson Thank Away Fans After Tough Loss

The boss and the skipper showed their appreciation for the fans support after the United loss.

The loss against Manchester United last week is not what anyone could have hoped for from that match. It was disappointing from top to bottom, with even Liverpool’s single goal coming from an own goal. The Reds were outmatched on the day, and against their greatest rivals. Instead of being disrespectful to the players, though, Liverpool fans brought a little class into Old Trafford by singing their players off the pitch.

This gesture didn’t go unnoticed by the manager and the captain, who took the time to properly thank the fans for their show of support ahead of this evening’s match against Watford.

“I always go to thank the fans for their support after every game but at Old Trafford my gratitude was even stronger than usual,” Klopp said in today’s match day programme, This is Anfield. “That was because the 3,000 Liverpool supporters in a crowd of almost 75,000 had somehow made themselves sound like there were 10 times as many in the away end. We heard them before the game, we heard them during the game and, most importantly of all, we heard them after the game when we needed them most.

“To hear them singing so loudly after the game had been lost gave me one of the strongest feelings I have had since I came here as manager. As well as pride at representing people who support Liverpool in this way, I also felt a powerful responsibility to bring them the success that they deserve.”

Jordan Henderson chimed in as well, promising that the players will rise to the occasion and repay that loyalty against Watford.

“Before, during and after, they sang and encouraged and at the end showed the lads, that even in defeat, they’ll be with us,” he declared. “It didn’t go unnoticed, I can tell you that. I’ve seen on social media since that, even as the United end emptied and we had all left the pitch, the singing continued – not as celebration but sending a message of defiance almost.

“That will be in our thoughts today for this game, which will be another really tough battle for us. When you have supporters who react in that way, when the team have been beaten at the away ground we probably all would agree we’d least like to lose at, it means as players we have a responsibility to give something back at the first opportunity.”

I will take that repayment in the form of three points today — maybe a hat trick by someone, I’m not fussed about who — and why don’t you throw in advancement to the Champions League semi-finals as well? Sound like a plan?
