Rumor Mongering: The Inevitable Iker Casillas Rumor

Come on, you kind of want to see more of this.

Could the former Real Madrid goalkeeper find himself back at Anfield, this time playing for the Reds?

This one was bound to happen.

At 36-years-old, Iker Casillas is past his prime, but what a prime it was! With Real Madrid he won five La Liga titles, three Champions Leagues, and lifted the Copa del Rey twice. And internationally, he was between the sticks for Spain’s unprecedented run of two European Championships and a World Cup win between 2008-2012.

If Casillas retired this year after his contract expired with Porto, no one could accuse him of not accomplishing enough. But if the rumor mongers are to be believed, he could still have life left in his legendary gloves, this time on the better half of Merseyside.

This rumor, courtesy of Spanish publication Mi Otra Liga, claims that Liverpool are interested in securing Casillas on a free this summer, as a back up to Loris Karius.

Although it is probably not a reliable report, the rumor does have a ring of truthiness about it. Simon Mignolet is likely to end his 5-year stint at Liverpool in the summer, and a big money move for the likes of Alisson or Jan Oblak seems less and less likely.

Loris Karius, and the squad as a whole, could certainly benefit from an experienced player in the dressing room who has won everything under the sun (except a Premier League title, wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

Additionally, Casillas was clearly moved by the reception he received from the Kop in the Round of 16 Champions League tie, stating after the match, “There is no better venue in European football than Anfield for appreciating excellence in visitors.”

Mate, you should see how we treat our own players.

Still, probably not a rumor you should put too much stock in, but it’s also not the worst idea in the world.
