Chris Kirkland urged Liverpool to sign Everton’s Jordan Pickford

Former Reds goalkeeper Chris Kirkland tried to get Liverpool to sign England No.1. Jordan Pickford three-years ago.

Pickford’s transfer to Liverpool’s arch-rivals Everton broke the all-time transfer record for a British goalkeeper in 2017 when the former Sunderland youngster moved to the Toffees for £30million.

Stability between the sticks has proven difficult for the Anfield club in recent years, despite Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius making over 230 appearances between them.

Liverpool are expected to probe the goalkeeping market this summer, but Jurgen Klopp will assess the mental state of Karius before making a move for a new No.1.

If Klopp is satisfied with the German goalkeeper’s assessment then it is expected that he will keep his place in Liverpool’s starting eleven for the coming season.

Simon Mignolet is almost certain to leave the club this summer, which means Danny Ward will be promoted as Jurgen Klopp’s second choice in goals.

However, Kirkland, who played for the Red for five-years, insists the uncertainty could have been avoided if the club would have taken his recommendation in 2015.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “I tried to get Liverpool to sign Jordan two or three years ago when I was at Preston with him.

“I was raving about him to the Liverpool staff, saying ‘this lad is the best I’ve worked with’.

“I told them he is going to be something special – but not many people take notice of me, to be honest!

“Unfortunately they didn’t get him and Everton have got, for me, a steal even at £30 million.”

The 24-year-old had an impressive first season at Goodison Park, in what was a turbulent season for Everton, cementing his place in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.
