Rumor Mongering: Liverpool’s Alisson Pursuit Revived?

Reports in Italy claim that Liverpool are ahead of Chelsea in a chase that nobody is sure exists.

Just days ago, reporters in England were stating that Liverpool’s pursuit of AS Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker was all but dead in the water, with the Reds’ interest purportedly long since stalled due in part to the hefty price tag. Now, there are noises from Italy indicating that not only have Liverpool revived their interest, but also that a bid in the region of €70 million is on the cards, resulting in Liverpool taking the lead against Chelsea in the race for Alisson’s services.

It’s not clear, of course, that there is even a race, though circumstances suggest it’s possible. Thibaut Courtois has expressed his unhappiness with his current contract following his World Cup outing, and there have long been suggestions that Real Madrid might lure the Chelsea keeper away to the continent. Liverpool, for their part, have been linked with Alisson for months now, with those links multiplying in the wake of Loris KariusChampions League misadventures.

There is not much concrete information supporting the latest rumors, which appear to stem in part from Rome-based daily Il Tempo. Further muddying the waters is the fact that Italian journalists seem to have vouched for the veracity of these reports after they were unsurprisingly called into question on the usual social media platforms. With the start of the season not far away, we’ll soon see whether there’s any truth to this one.
