Rumour Mongering: The Race for Fekir May Be Back On

The World Cup is over and we can focus on the real stuff now.

The World Cup ended today with Nabil Fekir’s France lifting the trophy again for the first time in twenty years. And, if Lyon’s chairman is to believed, Liverpool may have a shot at signing the World Cup winner after all.

We’ve spoken extensively about the circumstances surrounding Liverpool’s failure to sign Fekir earlier this summer, but it sounds like the player is still eager to complete the move. And naturally, that means everyone (close to him or not) is weighing in on whether it’ll happen.

Slightly more of an authority than most, Lyon’s chairman, Jean-Michel Aulas, has stated that the possibility of a move is still on the table.

”It seems to me that Liverpool could come back in,” Aulas said to French media before the World Cup final. “That’s what I’ve read in the press, but I’ve not been told anything. His transfer failed in June, but he hasn’t been affected by it. He is focused on the World Cup, and he still has his heart in Lyon.”

”Nabil is much closer to Lyon today than he was when we talked to Liverpool,” Aulas added, presumably making a subtle pitch for the player to find it in his heart to remain. ”Maybe he will go to Liverpool, or another club, but if he stays at Lyon, it will be a great year for him and for us.”

I’m sure it would, but so would a year at Liverpool. Whatever decisions are made in the next month, it sounds like this particular saga is far from over.
