Klopp Talk: Alisson “a Goalkeeper Who Can Play Football”

We’ve got ourselves a keeper.

All eyes were inevitably going to be on Alisson this season and he’s yet to do much wrong.

Even if some felt the criticism of Loris Karius was harsh, there was always an expectation that the Brazilian was a goalkeeper of a different calibre. And the manager is happy, even if he’s trying to keep things cool.

“Alisson is obviously a goalkeeper who can play football, which is good”, the Daily Mail report Klopp as saying. “He’s confident enough to do it. He didn’t do it for showing off, he did it to sort the situation.”

“He has a nice level of confidence, so he uses that. I like the save from the header more than the chip, but the chip was the right thing to do in that situation. Was there criticism [for the fee] in England? I thought in England you got this [a pat on the back] for spending big. I couldn’t be less interested in that by the way. We did it because we were convinced.

“We didn’t make the price. we only wanted a good player and the owners gave us the opportunity to do so.”

There was yet more praise for the new keeper from Andrew Robertson, who seems very happy with how he is making things easier for the back four.

“He’s been brilliant since he came in”, Goal report Robertson saying. “He’s a real presence at the back, you can see him coming out for corners and crosses and you’ve seen his wee chip got applause from the crowd, but I’m not sure if the gaffer wants to see that too many times.

“But fair play to him and that’s the confidence he’s playing with and it breeds onto the defence. When we needed him he came alive and palmed it away. Fair play to him so far, he’ll be delighted with three clean sheets and long may it continue.”

There’s not much doubt now: Liverpool have, as they say, a proper keeper. And he should be here for a long time.
