Leighanne Robe: I Can’t Wait To Be Part Of Things Here

Neil Redfearn’s first signing for the brand new Liverpool Women is working to get stuck in.

This summer was a busy one for the newly re-minted Liverpool FC Women. After having to experience a complete overhaul of the squad, including bringing in a new manager, the hard work has only just begun. In case you missed all the excitement or are just dipping your toes into the league-winning side of Liverpool, Neil Redfearn of Doncaster Belles was appointed new manager after taking over from Scott Rogers and he brought along defender Leighanne Robe as his first brand new signing.

The 24 year old came from Milwall Lionesses but started her career with Arsenal before moving to Watford in 2014. She’d been playing football since being around seven years old, telling the club website she was “always going out at break-times and joining in games with the boys. My primary school would have summer tournaments and I went along and played in one of those. One of the other kid’s dads ran the local football team and asked me if I wanted to join, so then I played three years with the local boys’ team.”

Despite being born in Cambridge, her family has strong Northern roots and is already quite happy in Merseyside. “Liverpool is a wonderful city which is so football-mad and it feels like home already, so I can’t wait to be part of things here.

“My family were originally from up north but moved south, and it was quite strange when my brothers and sisters all moved north with their careers and families while I was stuck down south without them!”

Now she’s a central defender in a WSL1 side, with a whole new history to write and she’s ready for the challenge.

“It’s something I’ve always strived for and been working hard towards for the last few years,” Robe continued.

“As a kid it’s always a dream to be a professional footballer and I’ve really put my focus into every area of my game and lifestyle to achieve this, so it feels nice to now be in this position. But with making the step-up I know that the real hard work starts now.

“I’ve got a lot of belief in Neil, the rest of the team and the club as a whole that we’ll be able to develop. It is a brand new team but I’m really excited about the challenge: to get going, build that team spirit and go on to achieve things.”
